Why Board Certification Matters
The American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) also known internationally as the International Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (IBHRS) is the leading global authority setting the standards for education, training, and certification in hair restoration surgery.
Physicians eligible for ABHRS/IBHRS certification must demonstrate extensive experience in the field and a proven commitment to excellence in both patient care and medical ethics. Achieving certification requires passing rigorous peer-reviewed examinations that assess advanced knowledge in the art and science of hair restoration.
While there is currently no American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) certification specific to hair restoration, the ABHRS/IBHRS remains the only certification recognized by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery(ISHRS) , the world’s largest organization dedicated to hair restoration education and advancement.
This distinction represents the highest level of professional credibility and expertise within the global hair restoration community.
Pioneer Hair Transplant Surgeon in the Dominican Republic
Dr. Alba Reyes Sagiv’s journey as a pioneer in hair restoration began with a deep passion for medicine and a commitment to excellence that continues to define her work today. Graduating Magna Cum Laude in Medicine, she went on to complete her dermatology residency at the Instituto Dermatológico y Cirugía de la Piel in Santo Domingo, where she served as Head of Residents and earned the prestigious Premio Augusto Stiefel for her outstanding academic achievements.
In 1998, her dedication and promise were recognized internationally when the International Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ISDS) awarded her the Perry Robins Scholarship Award, honoring her as a physician of excellence in dermatologic surgery. That same spirit of curiosity and mastery took her abroad, where she completed advanced studies in Israel, training in laser technology, skin rejuvenation, Mohs micrographic surgery, and photodynamic therapy foundations that strengthened her expertise in hair and scalp surgery.
Dr. Reyes further refined her craft under the mentorship of some of the most respected names in modern hair restoration. She trained with Dr. Finke and Dr. Alex Ginzburg in Israel, and continued her education through collaborations with Dr. Marcelo Gandelman (Brazil), Prof. Walter Unger (Canada), Dr. William R. Rassman (U.S.), inventor of the FUE technique, and Dr. Mark Avram (U.S.), and Dr. Jerry Wong (Canada).
